Methods Of Fuel Transport

Posted on: 19 June 2023

Each type of fuel has unique characteristics that can affect safety during transport. Finding the right method of fuel transport depends on the type of fuel you need to transport and the distance it needs to travel. There are several fuel transport methods to consider.

Pipelines

Pipelines are used to transport natural gas and crude oil along great distances. One of the major benefits of pipelines is they are more economical for transport. Since the pipelines run continuously and are unobstructed by weather or traffic, they are a highly efficient transport method. Since pipelines are buried deep underground, they have fewer risks of being affected by many types of natural disasters or fires. Moving natural gas via pipelines requires a unique process. The gas must be pressurized so it turns into a liquid before it can move through pipes. Once it is closer to its destination, the liquefied natural gas goes through regasification so it becomes a gas and is usable as natural gas in homes and businesses.

Tankers

Tankers are among the most common methods of moving fuel. Tankers come in various modes of transport, such as ships, railways, and trucks. Tanker ships often move crude oil and liquefied natural gas much like pipelines. Unlike pipelines, tanker ships can move fuel from one continent to the next by traveling across the ocean or other large bodies of water. When storage of fuel is necessary, tanker ships may be preferred over pipelines since tanker ships are capable of storing the fuel. Some tanker ships are dedicated to helping military and cargo ships out in the ocean by providing them with refueling needs.

Railway tankers have the advantage of moving fuel across large land masses quickly, especially in areas where pipelines are not feasible. There are tanker cars capable of transporting any type of liquid or gas, but petroleum and ethanol are among the most common types of liquids for fuel. Tanker cars come in a wide range of characteristics to safely carry different types of products. Cars can be insulated if it is carrying a temperature-sensitive material or pressurized for contents that need to remain in a liquid state during transport. Although accidents are more likely to happen with railway tankers than ships, railway systems have the advantage of being safer than trucks.

Lastly, tanker trucks are commonly used to transport fuel across shorter distances. Tanker trucks have the advantage of being the most useful for transport since they can travel over a wide variety of roads and bridges, but they also have the challenge of being more prone to traffic incidents and are affected by delays and weather conditions. Trucks are frequently used for last-mile distribution, such as providing residences with propane or kerosene, or delivery of gasoline and diesel to gas stations.

The process of transporting fuel can be intricate because each fuel source will have unique needs that affect the ideal transport method. Often a combination of methods is used when transporting fuel from its source to its final destination.
