There are tanker cars capable of transporting any type of liquid or gas, but petroleum and ethanol are among the most common types of liquids for fuel. Tanker cars come in a wide range of characteristics to safely carry different types of products. Cars can be insulated if it is carrying a temperature-sensitive material or pressurized for contents that need to remain in a liquid state during transport. Although accidents are more likely to happen with railway tankers than ships, railway systems have the advantage of being safer than trucks.

Lastly, tanker trucks are commonly used to transport fuel across shorter distances. Tanker trucks have the advantage of being the most useful for transport since they can travel over a wide variety of roads and bridges, but they also have the challenge of being more prone to traffic incidents and are affected by delays and weather conditions. Trucks are frequently used for last-mile distribution, such as providing residences with propane or kerosene, or delivery of gasoline and diesel to gas stations.
