Preparing Your Recreational Vehicle for Transport

Posted on: 2 June 2021

If you recently purchased an RV to take out on the open road for vacations, and you intend on moving to a new home but are unable to drive the vehicle yourself, finding a way to get it to its new location is a necessity. Many new RV owners rely upon transport services to handle the movement of these larger vehicles. Here are steps to take to prepare your recreational vehicle for the trip.

Remove Treasured Items From the Interior

Before a transport service arrives at your current home to pick up your RV, you need to take the time to remove all items from the inside of your vehicle that you feel would be transported more safely through another method or should be placed in storage. This includes electronics, documentation, and any other items that would be difficult to replace if it became damaged while in transport.

Check the Vehicle for Possible Problems

If you opt for a transport service where someone will be driving your vehicle or if it is being pulled behind a tow vehicle, the tires need to be in good shape so the driver does not become stranded while on the roadway. Make sure all tires are inflated to the proper level, and check that there are no leaks coming from underneath the vehicle. If you do find a problem that causes you concern, have your vehicle serviced before a transport service arrives.

Secure Items Inside of the RV

If you decide to keep items stored within your RV, it is important to have them completely secured so they do not get broken due to the normal movement of the vehicle. Place locking latches on cabinetry doors. Use bungee cords to keep items from shifting out of their locations. Conduct a test run by having someone sit in the back of the vehicle to observe which items are at risk for damage as you drive through town.

Take Photographs for Insurance Purposes

A transport service will evaluate the condition of your vehicle before they take it to your new home. You will be presented with a contract to sign which indicates any damage your vehicle already has so you are unable to place a claim for these areas in the future. It is wise to take photographs of both the outside and inside of your RV before it is transported. Make sure these pictures include time and date stamps. This is to give you the peace of mind that your vehicle arrives in the same condition it left in.
