3 Steps To Help Prepare Your Car For Body Repairs And A New Paint Job

Posted on: 11 February 2016

If you have a small fender bender, you may want to have the damage repaired, which can often all be done by an auto body and paint shop. There are other reasons why you may need to have bodywork done or a new paint job, such as fixing small dents. Before you take your car into the auto body shop, you may want to do some preparation yourself. Here are some tips to help you get your car ready for the body and paint shop:

1. Remove All Your Large Exterior Parts

There are many exterior parts on your car that you may not need to have painted. There may also be some that can be removed to get a better coat of paint. Bumper covers and body kit parts may be pieces that you want to remove to have them painted on both sides, or even to have them painted a different color than the paint on the rest of your car. Many of these pieces are held on with plastic clips, which you can remove to take them in to the shop separately. This will also ensure that the area beneath these parts gets painted.

2. Remove And Store All The Small Trim Pieces

In addition to the larger body parts that you may want to remove, there is also a lot of trim that you will want to remove from your car. You will want to remove any extra body trim that does not need to be painted. In addition, you may want to remove trim around windows and doors before you take your car to the body shop. If you are going to have your car towed to the shop, remove parts like door handles to make sure that they are painted well.

3. Taping And Covering Anything That Does Not Need Paint

Once you have removed all the parts that need to be painted separately or do not need paint, you will want to cover areas of your car that are exposed. You will want to cover things like the windows and trim that may be left. Overspray from painting can get on everything, so you will want to cover anything that you do not want to be painted. You can use paper and masking tape to cover these areas before you take your car to the body shop.
